Berlitz Japan opened in 1964, making us one of the most well-established language schools in Japan. We have language centers throughout the country in all of the major metropolitan cities, but the company is especially concentrated in the greater Tokyo and Osaka areas. We currently have approximately 1700 employees in our company representing over 50 nationalities.

Hiring Procedure

The first step is to visit Berlitz Japan's recruiting website. If an opportunity you would like to apply for is available please fully complete the online application. Selected applicants will be sent a detailed questionnaire allowing you to tell us more about yourself. After reviewing your completed questionnaire, we may invite you to a series of interviews, which, depending on the requirements of the position either take place in-person in Japan or via Skype with video. Candidates who successfully complete the interview process will be invited to attend our Instructor Qualification Program (6 days, unpaid). Upon successful completion of the program, you will be considered a Berlitz employee and will start your 3-month development period at your full salary and normal working conditions.

Teaching Contracts

At Berlitz Japan we have 3 basic contracts: a semi full-time contract, a fixed part-time contract, and a flexible part-time contract. The semi full-time contract is for less than 27 hours of work per week and pays 250,000 yen per month. There is a contract completion bonus for each full year completed. Extra paid work outside of the contract is available on a unit-by-unit basis. All semi full-time employees are also automatically included in our free traveler's accident insurance. For Berlitz Japan to sponsor your visa you must be on the semi full-time contract. If you are already working in Japan on a valid work visa, Berlitz Japan offers flexible time contracts, part-time contracts as well as the semi full-time contract.

  • National Holidays and Christmas day off (or days in lieu)

  • Monthly Commutation allowance
  • Contract completion bonus

Berlitz Japan does not supply or require employees to live in specific housing. We can provide direction to housing suppliers and, if necessary act as a housing guarantor.

Career opportunities

We have a career path for our instructors giving them the chance to move from an instructor position to management. You have the opportunity to either continue on the instructional side, as an Instructional Supervisor in charge of lesson quality at the local level, or on the sales side with Japanese language proficiency and sales skills, become a Language Center Manager at the local level. Additionally, we also have positions in Berlitz Business Communication School, the Berlitz Virtual Classroom and Headquarters.

Getting Started

Japan is one of the most expensive countries in the world. It is recommended you have at least $3000 US to cover your set-up and living expenses. The amount should cover 2 months rent in a semi-shared apartment, daily meal expenses, personal transportation expenses, and miscellaneous personal needs.
