Thank you for your interest in teaching at Berlitz in Korea
Berlitz Korea opened in October of 1995 and we have grown steadily since then. We now have 5 language centers in Seoul, with plans to open more in the coming years. We employ approximately 50 English native speaker instructors of various nationalities at our Samseong, City Hall, Yeouido, Kangnam, and Kwanghwamun Language Centers. The English Instructors are from Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the UK and the US.

Visa Requirements

Berlitz Korea will sponsor all of its Instructors for an E-2 Working Visa. For English Instructors to be eligible for visa sponsorship, applicants must come from an English-speaking country recognized by the Korean Immigration Office. These countries are Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States.
The E-2 visa is not necessary for Korean nationals. As well, those people with Korean ancestry may obtain an F-4 Visa which will allow them to work in Korea. Information on the documents necessary to secure this type of visa is available through the nearest Korean Consulate/Embassy or through the Immigration Offices in Korea.
To apply for the E-2 Working Visa, we require:
- Signed copy of the contract
- 2 photocopies of your passport showing number and picture
- Copy of your resume (clearly showing the dates you attended university)
- Original university diploma
- 2 copies of your University transcripts in envelopes sealed by the Registrar's Office
- two color passport style photos
- one criminal record check with apostille affixed (if your country does not issue apostilles, you can have the criminal record check certified by your nearest Korean embassy or consulate)
- one signed health self-declaration form which will be provided by the company (a medical exam is not needed initially, but will be conducted once you have arrived in Korea)
Applicants are reminded to ensure that they have easy access to this documentation. Delays in providing the above documents will result in delays in bringing successful candidates to Korea. More information on the visa application procedure can be given after the interview.

Hiring Procedure

After submitting one's resume/CV, potential instructors will be asked to fill out an application form. Following screening of application forms, applicants will be contacted for an interview. Interviews with applicants residing outside of Korea are done by telephone. Interviews with applicants in Korea are held at one of our language centers. After successful completion of the interview process, candidates are invited to attend the Berlitz Instructor Training before beginning to teach. The initial training consists of 6 full days. Instructors begin teaching regular classes after the 6 days of initial training. The initial training is unpaid training, but subsequent training is paid at the regular hourly (unit) rate.

Teaching Contracts

We offer our instructors fixed contracts. Instructors may teach an average of 8-10 units per day and are guaranteed to be paid for a minimum of 132 teaching units per month. Typically, instructors work between 160 and 210 units per month depending on needs of the language centers, instructors' financial goals, etc. Eight days of paid vacation are provided in the first year contract. Medical insurance is provided as well as severance pay (upon the successful completion of one's contract).
Instructors are provided with accommodations for their first 2 months of employment. This will be provided through a serviced residence located near the instructor's language center. This is provided free of charge.
By the end of the two-month period the instructor will be able to move into accommodations of his/her choice. The instructor may chose to move into his/her own accommodations at any time prior to the end of the two-month period. A staff member is available to assist Instructors in dealing with local real estate agents and arranging a lease. For instructors in their own housing, Berlitz provides a stipend of 400,000 won/month to help offset the cost of the rent and up to 5 million Won for a deposit on the apartment.
As well, reimbursement for a one way air-ticket from their point of hire to Seoul is provided upon arrival and an additional stipend awarded upon successful completion of the contract. Instructors hired locally are not eligible for the airplane ticket. However, if a locally hired Instructor needs to leave Korea in order to secure a visa, Berlitz will provide a round-trip airplane ticket for that purpose.

Career Opportunities

Berlitz has a tradition of promoting from within. In assisting our people in their professional development, we hope that they will become interested in taking on more responsibilities. In this way they can grow within our company. There are a number of opportunities for our Instructors to show their leadership abilities with the aim of taking on supervisory positions.

Getting Started

Our experience has shown that new Instructors initially need to bring approximately $500-1000 with them to cover day-to-day living expenses and miscellaneous expenses that can be incurred until the first salary payment is made. At first, most expenses are going to be for meals, transportation, laundry services and anything needed for one's apartment.
