Berlitz Taiwan has been in operation since 1996. We have formed a strong base of corporate customers and are currently going through a rapid growth phase. We currently have three locations in Taipei City, one in Hsinchu, and will be opening one in Taichung in late 2005. We employ instructors of various nationalities at Berlitz Taiwan. The English instructors are from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, the UK and the US. Our other language instructors are from France, Mexico, Japan and Taiwan. It is a nice group to work with and there is a very pleasant working.

Visa Requirements

Berlitz Taiwan will sponsor all of its instructors for an ARC Working Visa. To apply for the ARC Working Visa, we require:

• A physical examination and health check carried out at a recognized local hospital
• Copies of your passport showing number and picture, passports must be valid for at least a year
• Copy of your resume (clearly showing the dates you attended university)
• Original university degree

More information on this procedure can be given after the interview.

The ARC (Alien Residency Certificate) process can usually be completed in less than a month. As such it is essential that candidates coming from abroad have at least a 60-day Tourist Visa. It is converted into a working Visa locally.

Hiring Procedure

Due to strict government regulations, to be eligible to work for Berlitz Taiwan as an English instructor you must hold a passport from one of the following English speaking countries: Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the UK or the US and have a minimum of a four-year degree. We are interested in instructors who are willing to make a minimum one-year commitment.

After we have received your application and resume, we will send out a detailed questionnaire which will tell us more about you, your experience and your expectations of Berlitz. After we have received your completed questionnaire, we will contact you regarding an interview. Interviews are held at our language center during regular office hours.

After successful completion of the interview process, you will be invited to attend the Berlitz Instructor Training. The training is held at our language center and covers 5 full days with instruction in the morning and afternoon and some observations in the evenings. The training is provided free of charge. Instructors begin teaching their own classes once the training has been satisfactorily completed. All instructors will build their lessons gradually so as to allow them time to adapt to and become more confident with the new teaching method and materials.

Teaching Contracts

We offer full-time and part-time contracts for English instructors. Full-time instructors can teach up to 8-10 units a day and part-time up to 4-6 units depending on their availability. Full-time instructors must be available to work within the full time hours of 7:30am - 10 pm, while part time teachers must be available to work four units an evening between 5:00pm - 10 pm, (6:20pm - 9:20 pm is a common schedule). Both full and part-time teachers must be available for either Saturday or Sunday work.

Berlitz offers a degree of flexibility and fairness to our clients with regards to their scheduled lessons. As a result, schedules are confirmed at 7 pm the business day before the lessons take place (except on Saturdays, when they are confirmed at 12 pm). As a result, even though there is some degree of consistency to an instructor's schedule, they must contact the center after the schedules have been set in order to ensure that they are aware of any changes.

Classes vary in length from 2 to 10 units per day but Instructors will not be scheduled to teach more than six units in a row to ensure that they are not being over-worked. Classes may meet 1-6 days a week. We have group, individual, semi-private and Total Immersion classes at the language center and we go out to companies and teach groups and individuals. The maximum number of students in a group at the language center is six or ten, depending on the center. Charter classes (closed company classes) vary according to the needs of the customer. The students range in age from 4 to 64, with the majority being in their 20's and 30's. At present we teach a few children's classes but this will become more of a focus in the future and as such we are also interested in teachers who can teach both children and adults.

The salary is NT$450 per teaching unit. A unit is 40 minutes of teaching time and 5 minutes of break. Five days of paid vacation are provided at the end of the first full year contract as a bonus to full-time instructors. Alien Residency Cards and Medical insurance are provided to all instructors.

Getting Started

All recruiting, interviews, and training for our Taipei City locations are done at our Taipei City Hall Language Center. Recruiting, interviews, and training for our other locations will be done in their respective cities closer to the opening dates of the new centers. Please note that you must be available for a face-to-face interview to be considered for a position at any of our Language Centers in Taiwan.

If you are planning to come to Taipei from abroad, our experience has shown that you will initially need to bring approximately US$1,500 - $2,000 with you to budget for acquiring an apartment or similar accommodations, day-to-day living expenses and miscellaneous expenses that can be incurred until your first pay period. In Taiwan it is customary to pay employees once a month.
