Visa Requirements

TurkeyIf you are an American, Canadian, EU or non - EU citizen, you need to have a permit to reside and a work permit to work in Turkey.

Pre-approval for a temporary residence permit and a work permit is obtained by applying to the undersecretary of the Treasury and Ministry of Education in Ankara. For this you need to have either a TESOL or CELTA certificate. The completion of this process from first step to the last takes about 6 - 7 months.

If you can not wait that long, after signing the contract, you can enter Turkey with a tourist visa. At the end of your visa period you can extend your stay for another 3 months by crossing the Greek or Bulgarian borders and re-entering Turkey which takes only one day. You may repeat this process until you receive your official papers. In the meantime you may make all the necessary applications to the government authorities (Turkish Treasury and Ministry of Education) for approval of your residence and work permits. After receiving the approval documents from the Turkish authorities a folder will be prepared and sent to you either by DHL or will be given to you in person to be taken to the Turkish Consulate at your home town. Getting Started

Istanbul is the safest city in the world among cities of comparable size. Good quality housing at reasonable prices are available in the neighborhood. You can rent a flat of your own or share an apartment with expatriates or locals. At the moment we have shared housing accommodation, and we will be glad to recommend real estate agents who will help you finding accommodations in the neighborhood. Flat rentals range from USD 100,00-300,00 and up per month in Istanbul.

There are quite a few nursery schools in the neighborhood and in other parts of Istanbul. Their cost depends on the hours and other factors.

Vegetables and fruits are fresh, plenty and relatively cheap. American and Turkish style fast food is readily available in the neighborhood. There are self-service restaurants and other restaurant as well.

Teaching in a Language centers in Turkey can be both challenging and rewarding. It is definitely not for everyone. Because of the high demand for good Language Centers in Turkey, Berlitz students are for the most part very bright, and there is a high expectation of their teachers from students, parents and employers. Turkey's culture holds teachers and the teaching profession in very high respect but, at the same time, Turkish students are very outgoing and exuberant, making good classroom management skills essential.

There are dominating realities that overshadow teaching in Turkey. The Ministry of Education, sets and/or approves all aspects of the country's educational program, including curriculum. Ministry requirements can be very demanding and may seem to be unduly bureaucratic. The goals, as well as the methods, of the Ministry are often mysterious to a foreign teacher and the suddenness with which decisions and changes of policy can be made is sometimes frustrating.

An experienced, capable teacher with a good sense of humor, strong classroom management skills, and clear command of his/her subject material will encounter little difficulty in working here. The rewards far outweigh the disadvantages and the extraordinary cultural and historical richness of the country make living and working in Turkey a delightful opportunity for many.
