Visa Requirements

Non-Canadian citizens need to obtain a resident permit and a valid work permit. You can enter Canada on a 3-month visitor's permit and study or engage in volunteer work. Under special circumstances it is possible to grant a work permit for that short a period of time. As Citizenship and Immigration Canada requires proof that no Canadians are available and capable of completing the work assignment, Berlitz Canada is not able to sponsor instructors.

Hiring Procedure

Once the centre has received your application, you will be invited to an information session with the LIS and/or the LCD at that centre during office hours. Please inform the centre as to when you will be arriving to that they can prepare to welcome you.
After a successful interview, you will be invited to participate in a 5 full-day or a 10 half-day training session held at the centre and remunerated at the minimum hourly rate established by the Ministry of Labour. To be eligible to participate in the training, you should have a valid work permit, as you will start paying taxes on that earning.

Teaching Contracts

Berlitz Canada Inc. hires mostly part-time instructors and does not offer contracts. However, once hired by BCI the agreement is valid for life unless otherwise desired. The work schedule is flexible and work is assigned based on established availability and needs of the centre. There is a 3-month trial period.

Taxes and Pension Plans

Deductions on earnings are: Federal and Provincial taxes, Canada pension Plan and Unemployment premiums. Rates are based on yearly salary. There is also a 15% tax on all goods and services (GST).

Getting Started

Our experience has shown that you will have to prove to Immigration Canada that you have a certain amount of money estimated at between $5,000- $10,000 for medical emergency mainly, as you will not be eligible for the public health care before becoming a landed immigrant.
